Monsanto is about to sue an entire country

Monsanto is about to sue an entire country
Monsanto is threatening to use trade agreements to overrule Guatemala's government. Will you chip in?

What happens when small farmers in Guatemala save seeds from one year to the next, as they have for centuries? They get up to four years in prison.

That's according to the "Monsanto Law," which was recently struck down by Guatemala's highest court.

But now Monsanto is saying the law is required under free trade deals, and it's likely only a matter of time before it launches a wave of lawsuits to force Guatemala to give in.

Developing nations like Guatemala have no chance against a corporate superpower like Monsanto -- that's why we're standing with Guatemala and fighting to stop the expansion of trade deals that allow this kind of bullying.

Can you chip in $1 to help stand up to Monsanto?

Yes, I'll chip in $1 to help Guatemala and other developing nations stand up to Monsanto's bullying.

For centuries, farmers have saved seeds from one year to the next. But Monsanto now claims that seeds are its intellectual property -- and it will use trade deals to force countries like Guatemala to give in no matter what their courts say about it.

This is a classic example of how Monsanto and other multinational corporations use trade agreements to bully sovereign governments -- and as we speak, it's pushing for new trade deals like the TTIP and the TPP, which would expand its powers to stampede over the rights of people even more.

That's where we come in. SumOfUs was created to leverage the global consumer power of our 5 million members to take on multinational corporations that have gotten too big for any of us to take on alone.

Can you chip in $1 to help stand up to Monsanto and its anti-democratic trade deals?

Yes, I'll chip in $1 to help Guatemala and other developing nations stand up to Monsanto's bullying

Thanks for all that you do,
Paul, Jon and the rest of the team at SumOfUs

Ban the Killing of Feral Cats in Ireland

Dear ................,

All cats, no matter whether they're feral or someone's pets, should have the right to live without fear of being trapped by a stranger and potentially murdered for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. That's why Care2 member Maureen G. started a petition asking Ireland to ban the trapping and killing of feral cats.

In Ireland, pest control or "wildlife management" companies frequently kidnap feral cats off the streets to kill them or release them in places where they're unfamiliar with the territory. They say this is necessary to "prevent the spread of disease," but in reality, science shows feral cat colonies pose no health risks to humans.

Obviously, there are more effective, far less cruel ways to reduce feral cat populations than by indiscriminately killing them. Neutering or spaying the cats rather than slaughtering them outright, for example, would be a much better long-term solution to the issue -- and it wouldn't carry the risk of accidentally murdering someone's beloved pet.

In Ireland, there is no legislation to protect feral cats and save them from suffering. Please ask Ireland to ban the killing of feral cats!

Before the bees are gone

Avaaz.org: Before the bees are gone

Dear friends,

Right now, billions of bees are dying. Already, there are nowhere near enough honeybees in Europe to pollinate the crops, and in California -- the biggest food producer in the US -- beekeepers are losing 40% of their bees each year.

We're in the middle of an environmental holocaust that threatens all of us, because without pollination by bees, most plants and ⅓ of our food supply are gone.

Scientists are sounding the alarm about pesticides that are toxic to bees, and say we're using way, way more pesticides on our crops than we need. But as with oil companies and climate change, big drug companies that sell pesticides are fighting back with corporate-funded junk science that questions the evidence, and gives politicians an excuse to delay.

Scientific studies are expensive. Avaaz may be the only crowdsourced funding model in the world able to raise enough to fund the world's first large scale, grass-roots supported, totally independent study of what's killing our bees, that decisively challenges the junk science of big pharma. The need is urgent, and if we can't do this, it's not clear who can. Let's see if we can raise a massive fund to save our bees.

Click to pledge what you can, we'll process your donation only if we raise enough to fund a study that can go head to head with big pharma:

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €2

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €3

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €6

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €12

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €24

To pledge an amount other than the ones listed above, click here.

We're running out of time. A new study has revealed the scary truth: in more than half of European countries, there are not enough honeybees to pollinate crops. In the UK, the honeybee population is only a quarter of what is actually needed for pollination -- and although other kinds of bees are stepping in to fill the honeybee void, we'll likely start losing them too if we keep loading our crops down with pesticides.

And it might all be for nothing: in the 70 years since pesticides were introduced, we've learned that some of them do more harm than good when it comes to cultivating our food because they kill off the natural enemies of pests. Worse still, over time many pests become immune to pesticides, forcing farmers to use more and more deadly chemicals -- often poisoning themselves in the process.

Everyone from official government agencies to scientists agree that one group of widely-used pesticides called neonicotinoids is killing bees. But chemical giants like Bayer and their supporters continue to argue against regulation of their products, presenting self-funded research they claim show pesticides aren't necessarily responsible for the bees' deadly decline. And it's working -- in the United States, the newest battleground for the ban on deadly pesticides, the government says there is not yet enough evidence to justify a ban. If we lose in the US, Europe could follow suit and lift their own temporary hold on these dangerous chemicals.

It's time to end the debate once and for all. When enough of us pledge, Avaaz will fund research by highly-respected scientists to fill critical gaps in knowledge. Then, we can join beekeepers and local advocacy organisations in a massive global offensive to save the bees by fueling strategies like:
  • Organising a media tour with our giant Bernie the bee to ensure the research shows up in the world's biggest media outlets.
  • Funding public opinion polls in key agricultural countries to smash the claim that farming communities can't survive without bee-killing chemicals.
  • Going after retailers to take the deadly pesticides off their shelves. It's already happening in Europe, but we'll get supermarkets and garden centres around the globe to follow suit.
  • Campaigning hard to get a game-changing anti-pesticides bill that has been lounging in the US congress passed once and for all.
  • Naming and shaming those pushing the bee-killing pesticides by running hard-hitting billboard and newspaper ads.
  • Taking legal action to stop government agencies that have approved neonicotinoid pesticides, despite evidence proving they are toxic to bees and a host of other beneficial creatures.
The bees are up against a well-oiled, resource rich machine that will do whatever it takes to ensure the profits of chemical companies and big agriculture don't take a hit. Pledge now to support a massive effort to save the bees -- Avaaz will only process donations if we raise enough to make a difference:

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €2

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €3

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €6

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €12

YES, I'LL PLEDGE €24

To pledge an amount other than the ones listed above, click here.

If the bees die out, the world we hand off to our grandchildren will look very different -- apples and almonds could become exotic foods in our supermarkets. But we're making incredible progress in the fight to protect our precious pollinators: last year 2.4 million Avaaz members were part of a massive movement in Europe that convinced the EU Parliament to place a 2-year ban on the worst bee-killing chemicals. If our movement joins forces now to clear up the false debate that's stalling our legislators, we could win urgently-needed pesticide bans all over the world and end the chemical war on bees once and for all!

With hope and determination,

Ricken, Mia, Emma, Allison, Christoph, Mais, Emily, Ian, Jeremy and the whole Avaaz team

Stop the biggest mass execution this century

Avaaz.org: Stop the biggest mass execution this century

Dear friends,

A kangaroo court in Egypt just sentenced 528 people to death. This is likely the biggest mass execution ruling this century, but one man has 10 days to stop the killings. Let’s call on Grand Mufti Allam to use his moral authority to provide clemency and block this barbarous ruling. Join the urgent call to stop the executions:

SIGN THE PETITION
A kangaroo court in Egypt just sentenced 528 people to death. This is likely the biggest mass execution ruling this century, but one man can stop the killings.

Egypt’s most important religious figure, Grand Mufti Allam has 10 days to reject the decision. Religious leaders are already condemning the ruling, and as the first Mufti to be elected by his peers, he has a legitimate mandate to be the nation’s moral leader. Let’s create a global plea from people of all religions to provide clemency and block this barbarous ruling.

This was a political show trial -- the military regime is using the firing squad to wipe out the opposition. If the world does not speak up, the consequences for Egypt and the world are beyond dangerous. Sign now to save these lives and stop a spiral of violence -- when one million of us have joined, religious leaders in Egypt will deliver our call for compassion directly to the Mufti:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_mass_execution_loc/?bSTejbb&v=37970

After the hope of Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands took to the streets to overthrow decades of dictatorship, the Egyptian people democratically elected a Muslim Brotherhood government. But last summer the military staged a populist coup, Brotherhood supporters rioted, and then the military declared the party a terrorist organisation and violently cracked down -- 16,000 democracy activists, journalists, and even teenage school girls have been arrested!

The trial was a joke -- on top of charges of rioting and destruction of property, the 528 are all accused of killing one police officer, and defense lawyers were barred from the sentencing session, which lasted less than an hour! But this is not a one off -- the judiciary is repeatedly being used to crackdown on political dissentwhile security forces accused of killing hundreds of protesters are rarely held to account. There are real security threats, but as the military authorities' iron fist and intimidation grows, extremism is fuelled.

This is the harshest mass conviction in modern Egyptian history, but what happens next in this case could have repercussions way beyond Egypt. Sign the urgent petition now asking the Grand Mufti not to rubber stamp state-sponsored murder and to provide the ethical leadership Egypt desperately needs:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/stop_mass_execution_loc/?bSTejbb&v=37970

The world has kept silent as this regime has launched an all out attack against an imperfect but elected government and brought democracy in Egypt to its knees. Global leaders trumpet democracy at every opportunity and strongly condemn anti-democratic plots from Crimea to Caracas. But not in Egypt. Now if the world looks away and allows this cruel mass execution to happen, a dangerous message will resonate across the globe that the world will stand by democracy, except for political Islam. That will empower one small but very dangerous group that can hurt us all: the extremists.

Time and again the Avaaz community has forcefully advocated against brutal injustice and for peaceful, meaningful reconciliation between embittered communities. Right now Egypt’s future hangs in the balance, and a wildly unjust and provocative ruling like the one handed down in Minya could push it over the edge. Let’s bring the people’s voice to this precarious situation and ensure that these 528 lives are saved.

With hope,

Alice, Nick, Oli, Wissam, Bissan, Mais, Emily, Ari, Ricken and the whole Avaaz team

Dear .............................

The United States has had a military presence in Afghanistan since 2001. Now, many Afghan citizens think it's high time for America -- and the rest of the world -- to get out of their country.

In 2009, after President Hamid Karzai was re-elected, the U.S. and other nations accused him of fraud. In turn, Karzai said the U.S. was trying to interfere in the democratic process. And now that Karzai is stepping down, as he is constitutionally obligated to do, the danger of corruption in the next election is only going to increase.

If Karzai really has the best interests of the Afghan people at heart, he will do his best to ensure that the next president is elected justly. A group of Care2 members who call themselves the "Afghan Youth" started a petition with us to advocate for their rights. They write:

We urge you Mr. President to honestly support us in electing our next President through free and fair elections. We request you not to interfere in the election and to prevent all kinds of intervention in it either by foreigners or by internal elements including the on-duty government officials.

The people of Afghanistan deserve the right to honestly elect their new leaders. Will you join Afghan Youth and sign the petition demanding an equitable 2014 election?

Dear f..................,,

Just like other teens around the world, the "punks" in Indonesia like to put on concerts, dress in distinctive ways and hang out with their friends. They certainly don't mean any harm to anyone. Yet they continuously face persecution and oppression by local authorities.

In 2011, dozens of young men and women were rounded up at a show they'd staged for local orphans. They were taken to a police detainment center, where their heads were forcibly shaved and where they were trapped for ten days. Officials said it was "for their own good."

And the abuse didn't stop there. In April 2012, a homeless punk couple were forcibly caned. Though there have been fewer public crackdowns since then, a recent report by Vice TV found that the punks in Indonesia's Aceh province a re still frequently harassed, threatened and beaten.

No one should be punished for living a lifestyle that makes them happy and doesn't hurt anyone. Tell officials in Aceh to respect the punks' human rights and leave them in peace!
